KaiWu 开悟

The work KaiWu 开悟 is a neon installation made up of two frames, inspired by the shape of exercise books used for practicing character calligraphy. The frames feature dotted, diagonal and horizontal lines that serve to structure the strokes of the characters.
At the center of each frame, emoticons and numbers borrowed from the WeChat app have been utilized to form a word puzzle, drawing inspiration from the characters 开 and 悟.
The character 开 is created through the combination of the number 1 and the character 廾, which represents two hands held together in a sign of respect and various other meanings.
The character 悟 is made up of the synogram for heart, the number 5, and the synogram for mouth, represented in the piece by the emoticons ♥️ and 👄, and the number “5” from WeChat.
This interpretation of the characters 开悟 serves two purposes: making the concept accessible to all cultures and providing a pedagogical element through the use of iconographic symbols. It also references the work’s materials and message, highlighting the interconnectedness of all things through our use of smartphones and social media.
It’s worth noting that the character Wu (which is half of Kai Wu) also holds significant meaning within the context of Buddhism. In Buddhist teachings, enlightenment is achieved by transcending the illusory perceptions of the five senses. This concept is reflected in the symbols that make up the character Wu - the number 5 representing the five senses, the synogram for heart representing the core of our perceptions, and the synogram for mouth representing the intake of information. This work serves as a visual exploration of this fundamental Buddhist principle.

L'œuvre "KaiWu 开悟" est une installation en néon composée de deux cadres, inspirée de la forme des cahiers d'exercices utilisés pour pratiquer la calligraphie des caractères. Les cadres comportent des lignes pointillées, diagonales et horizontales qui servent à structurer les traits des caractères.
Au centre de chaque cadre, des émoticônes et des nombres empruntés à l'application WeChat ont été utilisés pour former une énigme de mots, s'inspirant des caractères 开 et 悟.
Le caractère 开 est créé par la combinaison du nombre 1 et du caractère 廾, qui représente deux mains tenues ensemble en signe de respect et avec diverses autres significations.
Le caractère 悟 est composé du synogramme pour le cœur, du nombre 5 et du synogramme pour la bouche, représenté dans l'œuvre par les émoticônes ♥️ et 👄, et le nombre "5" de WeChat.
Cette interprétation des caractères 开悟 sert deux objectifs : rendre le concept accessible à toutes les cultures et fournir un élément pédagogique grâce à l'utilisation de symboles iconographiques. Elle fait également référence aux matériaux et au message de l'œuvre, mettant en évidence l'interconnectivité de toutes choses grâce à notre utilisation des smartphones et des réseaux sociaux.
Il convient de noter que le caractère Wu (qui constitue la moitié de Kai Wu) revêt également une signification importante dans le contexte du bouddhisme. Dans les enseignements bouddhistes, l'illumination est atteinte en transcendant les perceptions illusoires des cinq sens. Ce concept est reflété dans les symboles qui constituent le caractère Wu - le nombre 5 représentant les cinq sens, le synogramme pour le cœur représentant le noyau de nos perceptions, et le synogramme pour la bouche représentant l'absorption de l'information. Cette œuvre sert d'exploration visuelle de ce principe bouddhiste fondamental.
