£ ¥ € $ Lies 自我幻象

The artwork, entitled “£ ¥ € $,” is a glass neon piece that emits a white blue light. The inspiration for the piece came during the artist’s travels, when he noticed foreign currency exchange offices in airports displaying international currencies in glowing letters above their branches. The sight reminded him of the letters in their first name.

The title of the work plays on the similarities between the lettering of the neon sign and the word “lies.” The desire to possess or accumulate money relates to the materialistic dream that often leads to an unfulfilled void. The neon sign, therefore, serves as a reminder of the “lies” perpetuated by the simple promise that “money will make you happy.”

The typography used for the neon writing is cursive, evoking a naive representation of the purpose of life as material accumulation. The style is reminiscent of American cultural influences, particularly the graphical signature of Disney.

The work also uses the artist’s first name, acting as a personal brand or logo. In the 19th century, with the expansion of mass production, brands were created to compensate for the lack of proximity between product and consumer. However, this same problem has been transposed to contemporary art, with the public and collectors alike often recognizing the style of an artist through their work. This can be limiting for an artist, as it can consciously or unconsciously subjugate them to market issues.

In the TCCA installation, the work is accompanied by a crystal ball. Crystal balls are often used by occultists to predict the future, and they have the ability to reverse the image of the environment when viewed through them. This creates a narrative that allows the viewer to understand the work and places them in the role of a medium reading the future. The reversed image of “£ ¥ € $” on the wall serves as a powerful symbol, deconstructing the artificial and constructed relationship between money and identity.
